What is IS 5568 compliance?

IS (Israel Standard) 5568 is an Israeli law specifically regarding web accessibility standards.

It's very similar to WCAG 2.0, and compliance is required by most businesses as well as the public sector.

However, it is a bit more lenient than WCAG, because captions for audio and video are not required. This is due to current technical issues regarding support for the Hebrew language.

Who must comply with the IS 5568?

There is a list of industries to which IS 5568 applies, and they range from telecommunications to commerce and healthcare.

If your business falls under one such industry, and you have a website that is available in Israel, compliance is required.

The list is admittedly broad, and most businesses fall under it. However, there is a caveat: "private contractors" who make less than 100,000 NIS in revenue per year are exempt.

Businesses with websites found to be non-compliant may face fines of up to 50,000 NIS. Additionally, the plaintiff only has to claim non-compliance regardless of whether damages were caused.
